Generally, the more you spend, the better it works, especially when you spend your ad dollars on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.

Even money spent on press releases and rich releases can be ephemeral as they only exists online as long as you pay for them to live there. Again, they’ll work only as long as you pay.

SEO, social media engagement, blogger outreach, content marketing, and community engagement are ways you can — and do — build something for the future.ibm-selectric-typewriter-1961

The moment you stop paying rent on your online advertisements, you’ll be evicted — thus is the ephemeral nature of online advertising; if you invest in your community and develop connection, attachment, and encourage your friends, fans, and current customers by making them brand ambassadors, you’ll end up owning your own home and all the associated equity.

While a contextual text ad feels like SEO because shows up at the top of search results, it isn’t. The moment you stop paying, all the benefit goes away.

Even native advertising, with its focus on being “viral” and “sticky” mostly only exists as long as you pay — and, it’s always anchored to content, be it an article, photo, infographic, or video — at the end of the day, even native advertising depends on content marketing.

Have you examined the organic reach of your Facebook page recently? You may be surprised to find that your posts do not reach every single fan – you may not even come close. Has Facebook misled brands and social media managers about the platform’s power as a marketing tool?Last month, Valleywag’s Sam Biddle reported that Facebook is in the process of slashing organic page reach down to 1 or 2 percent. A survey by EdgeRank Checker looked at 50,000 posts from the top 1,000 pages on Facebook and found that organic reach by fan had already dipped to 6.51 percent in March of 2014. The truth is that organic reach has been steadily declining since 2012.

Unfortunately, many of these articles have presented the problem without offering a solution, leaving page managers unsure of what to do. In extreme cases, some companies have deleted their Facebook page in retaliation; carryout app Eat24 even wrote a (NSFW) break-up letter before deleting their page, which had accumulated more than 70,000 likes.

It is understandable that companies are concerned about the investment they made in open social communities like Facebook and Twitter. They have operated under the assumption that the platforms were (mostly) free and effective channels for reaching their customers. Recent changes cast doubt on the validity of these assumptions. To combat these changes, companies must leverage Facebook’s advertising platform, invest in creating content that is valuable and engaging and consider creating their own communities.

Amplify Content with Advertising
In the short term, the easiest way to combat the drop in organic reach and increase visibility is to leverage Facebook’s advertising platform. While many marketers may be irritated with this solution, it should not be a surprising answer to the problem. In fact, the integration of ads into the News Feed rather than in the right rail helps present content to Facebook users in the way they prefer.

Additionally, Facebook’s maturing ad platform provides an incredible number of parameters to target both your fans and people across the network. If used correctly, Facebook’s advertising platform should enable marketers to reach their intended audience effectively and efficiently.

What is inbound all about? Not just inbound marketing, but inbound sales and inbound services, too. Do you think you could explain it in 30 seconds or less? Give it a try. We can wait …

Yep, it’s harder than it sounds! The world of inbound is a big one — and its constantly growing and evolving. Industry experts are seeing things like social media engagement and remarkable content play a greater and greater role in attracting the right traffic to websites, while “faceless” corporations who neglect their potential and current customers are quickly losing ground.

And it’s not just marketers who are using the inbound methodology. While marketers continue to develop strategies to draw the most qualified visitors and contacts to their sites, sales and customer service representatives are beginning to use the inbound philosophy to close more of those qualified contacts into customers and delight them into promoters.
So what is inbound all about today — and what do you need to know to do it correctly? Regardless of whether you’re in marketing, sales, services, or another part of your organization, there are three key mantras you must know to be successful with inbound. Let’s take a look at them.

Inbound Mantra #1: The buyer is a person. Treat them like it.

How current is your SEO strategy?

Google keeps messing with us. As soon as we thought we had Panda down, they introduced Penguin. Frankly, we weren’t too excited about the learning curve on that one. Then they threw an invisibility cloak over keywords used in Google searches, which made it even harder to figure out how people were finding us.

And now we’ve got Hummingbird to deal with.

Google Hummingbird

Introduced on September 26, 2013, Hummingbird is Google’s revamped search algorithm designed to increase the organic nature of Google searches, reward websites that deliver useful content and let us search for stuff with phrases we might use when talking to a friend.  Or to a mobile phone. (Where can I get gluten-free pizza around here? Gimme the stats on the final game in the 2002 World Series.)

If your IT guy or gal is adept at second-guessing Google algorithms and tricking Google into finding you, Hummingbird might not be a welcome upgrade.

But if you’ve been posting useful, keyword-rich content on your website, cultivating high quality link-building and participating on social platforms in a thoughtful way, you’re in luck. By complying with basic SEO strategies, you will find that Google is trying to help businesses like yours come out ahead.

Both experts and high-growth firms agree that SEO is the most effective online marketing tactic for generating online leads. And now, Google is enhancing their search capability so that businesses and prospective customers can find each other faster.

The company you keep

In this new, more organic type of search, Google is inserting itself into (and making judgments about) your website’s online relationships.

It used to be that you could pay, trade or beg anyone to link to you, thereby improving your page rank. The more links the better, even if the originating sites were questionable or you had hired a troll to sit in a backroom and post comments (and your link) on a thousand blogs.

Google didn’t like that. With the introduction of “no follow links” and the ability to better identify “spammy” sources, spraying links throughout the Internet not only stopped working, it started costing you. Page rankings got spanked when search engines identified link-backs as originating from unsavory sites, unrelated content or artificially populated social platforms.

Roll forward to 2014. Today, high quality link-building is even more dependent upon good content.  Relevance is key. The bloggers, articles, websites and publications that are linking back to you should somehow relate to the services you provide.  And they should be coming from industry sources you’d be proud to hang out with.

So how do you inspire these like-minded folks to send their followers to you?

Have a Footer Bar or Header Bar Opt-In Form — especially if you want to attract the visitor’s attention, but not hit them with an “in your face” popup requiring them to take action

Put a “Subscribe” Box In Particular Posts…(shhhh…remember the “Get The Rest Of This” from the Optin statistics above? He split a great post into two, kept the first half in the post and the second half in a pdf. The visitor had to opt-in to the subscribe form in the post to get the second half.)
Create a “Cascade” of Exit Popups…under precise “fighter pilot” control…each popup with its own content, each sending the user to a unique URL…and you can add the “cascade” to all your pages or any of your pages…you choose…!

Here’s the most poorly kept secret in the marketing, PR, sales, and religion world: Conversion is a numbers game. Whether it’s getting into the New York Times or going viral on YouTube, getting retweeted by @katyperry, or appearing on the 4th hour with Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford, numbers matter.

We depend not only on the generosity of strangers to keep the lights on, we also depend on the law of large numbers to make sure we reach enough people in general through our ads, our mentions, and reviews to make our end-of-month, quarter, and yearly numbers so that we secure that sweet bonus and the pool we promised the family. Eyeballs, viewers, readership, ratings — it’s all about getting in front of as many of the right people as humanly possible. Right?

Why would it be any different when it comes to blogger and influencer outreach marketing? The conventional approach in outreach marketing and PR relies on converting just a handful of highly influential journalists, online writers, and bloggers who have a well-established popularity and readership. The strategy here is to cajole, seduce, and woo between one and 25 blogger-journalists to report and write on your behalf and in their favor.

The idea is that if you’re able to influence a top influencer and thus garner her influence to earn the support of your product, mission, ministry, or message, then you will win direct, endorsed access to the impossibly large number of readers, followers, fans, and friends who hang on their every word. The expectation is thus: the reputation of the A-lister will rub off on the messaging, bringing with it a (tacit) endorsement and then unfettered access to a fan base that often does base a lot of their decisions on what the most popular reviewers are saying. If I can get someone like the esteemed and popular Mr. John Brownlee to blog about my cool new designerly products, who knows how many people will queue up to place an order. And they just might. I know I would, if John Brownlee thought it was cool.
Are you able to cut through the noise?

But there are a number of catches to this perfect world: 1) How much time do you have? 2) How many A-listers do you already know? 3) How awesome is your product? 4) How compelling is your news? 5) How generous is your “gift”? 6) What is your goal? and 7) Is it OK to fail, to fall flat on your face with a couple snake eyes?

OK, if you’re going to do a top-down outreach where the goal is to influence top influencers, you’ll need some time, especially if you aren’t already in bed with the top influencers in your industry already. Dropping a tip, cold, into the tips@ drawer at Mashable is not the way this business works. There are exceptions, but all the top A-list successes I have had have always been warm and hot calls.

So, how many A-listers do you know and when do you need to launch the grand announcement? I mean, everything relies on not only the quality of your produce or message but also whether it’s newsworthy. And, if it is newsworthy, what’s in it for me, for the blogger, for the reader? Will the post or article lend prestige or bragging rights to the author of the piece? Are you Aston Martin and did you lend your blogger a 2014 V12 Zagato sports coupe? Or, are you just trying to get someone to notice your new Android app; and, if that’s the case, are you prepared to ship out a bunch of prepaid Nexus 5s with that app already installed for their testing pleasure? That V12 Zagato’s a pretty generous gift, even if it’s just a day at a local Aston Martin dealership and test drive (or maybe even a ride).

In its simplest and purest form, I define it this way:

Mobile mindset is the framework that enables organizations of all sizes to deliver the power of mobile through innovation and without disruption to the business.

Regardless of the size or the scope of the mobile engagement, a mobile mindset applies to all facets of user interactions and must be embraced by everyone involved, from developers to leadership.
