Everyone talks about the weather, but for most of us it’s just conversational chitchat. That’s not the case for farmers or those who work with them. For those folks, yesterday’s rain or last week’s temperatures mean a lot more than whether the grass is green or the kids’ soccer games were washed out. Weather, for them, can be the difference between a bumper crop or a bust, between profit and loss.

 

Unfortunately, dealing with weather variability is getting harder for farming and agriculture. Mother Nature has taken to extremes in recent years, and this year is turning out to be a whopper. This spring, we saw ongoing severe drought in some places and torrential rains not far away. Just last year, it was so warm and dry farmers were pretty much done planting in April. This year, it was so cold and then so wet in many areas that less than 20% of seed was in the ground by the middle of May.

It’s not just one year to the next that is a rollercoaster. Already this spring there’s been wild variability over a span of days or months, and from one side of a state to the other:

  • Western Iowa is still in severe drought, but the eastern part of the state has gotten so much rain that the rivers are flooding and crop fields are nothing but massive puddles that can’t be planted.
  • After a very cold spring, mid-May brought a phenomenal surge of heat to the central Plains and western Corn Belt, sending temperatures to record highs for the month. For example, after a late freeze on May 12, temperatures hit 108°F on May 14 in Tekamah, NE, breaking a record for the month set back in 1934 – the days of the Dust Bowl. Tekamah was not alone; in Iowa, Sioux City (106°F) and Sac City (108°F) broke Dust Bowl-era records; so did Grand Island (102°F) and Omaha (101°F) in Nebraska.
  • Parts of the Great Plains and Corn Belt are still suffering severe drought, with every Great Plains state except North Dakota seeing poor to very poor conditions in at least one-third of its rangeland and pasture. But move east a bit to Rochester, MN, and May set a precipitation record with 8.55 inches of rain, after almost 10 inches in March and April.

These wild weather swings imperil the livelihood of thousands of farmers and their families, as well as communities and businesses. What’s more, those farmers and the corn, wheat, soybeans and other crops they grow are the foundation of our food system in terms of sales, acreage, and volume.

What this wild weather ride drives home for me is that resilience is the key to survival. And that comes down to implementing practices that give crops the best chance to thrive, whether it’s wet or dry, warmer or colder. EDF is working to promote practices that help farmers deliver both the productivity our food system needs and the ecosystem benefits, like clean water, we all need. We’re helping famers:

  • Use better information to manage nutrients more efficiently. The more information they have, the better farmers can manage their nutrients, in particular costly fertilizers. Apply too much and the excess (along with the money that paid for it) gets washed into rivers and lakes. Apply too little or at the wrong time, and yields suffer. EDF is working to increase awareness of and access to innovative tools and methods that help farmers measure more precisely the nutrient needs and status of their crops.
  • Plant cover crops and adopt reduced tillage practices. Cover crops and reducing tillage increase the vegetation holding the soil in place and make the soil healthier, enabling it to hold moisture better, prevent soil erosion, and increase the productivity of the soil itself. So if it rains really hard, cover crops and no till prevent those rains from washing soil away. And if the rains just don’t come, these same practices hold on to what moisture there is in the soil, helping it support a crop more than tilled soils.
  • Implement strategically placed buffers and wetlands. These practices can slow down flood waters, reducing how much damage they do by rushing across farm fields. They can also store water in drier times, allowing that water to feed back slowly into fields. And they can moderate the level of the water in the soil itself. Done right, these practices can dramatically improve water quality and the resiliency of a landscape without taking much land out of production.

These days, thanks at least in part to global warming, Mother Nature has farmers on a wild rollercoaster ride. They need the tools to adapt so they can provide all of us with food on the table and a cleaner, healthier environment.

Last year I took a look at Google’s new privacy policy and wasn’t that happy with the way it was presented. Too many links to click, hard to backtrack to make sure you read everything, not sure which parts were boilerplate web safety advice vs. Google’s specific policy, and more. But it got me to thinking, which those who know me rightly find dangerous, about what the future of privacy policies really are. It’s clear that no one is terribly happy with the current situation. Users have no idea what they are agreeing to, privacy advocates complain about the lack of transparency and pillory companies, governments also criticize and regulate companies for their behavior, and companies go to great lengths to obscure what they are doing because they know they will be criticized no matter what. I wonder if there is a better way.

In many ways, privacy comes down to a simple question. Do we need to depend on the free market or on governments? Of course, in the end, it will be a combination of both forces that tell us where we end up, and we should expect to end up in different places in different countries and cultures.

But I think that people have focused on regulation as the only solution, and we’ve overlooked how fraught that approach is with problems:

  • Each government (or consortium of governments, such as the EU) will likely have its own regulations, exposing global businesses to risk and cost, neither of which makes privacy any better.
  • If individual people would prefer different approaches to privacy, a one-size-fits-all regulation is unlikely to allow that.
  • It will take years to have a significant impact, and each technological and business model innovation will affect privacy for years before it is regulated.

I am hopeful that the ability of the public to be educated on privacy perils might allow a free market solution. Perhaps the regulation just needs to ensure transparency of exactly what you are giving up each time you click “accept.” Might companies compete on how they handle your information? Might companies pay consumers for the value of the data that they are parting with? Can companies use privacy as a differentiator?

I don’t know if any of these ideas would work. I just feel like we always act as though regulation of corporate behavior is the only approach. I’d love to explore a free market approach to privacy.

In the end, we all need to admit that we are willing to give up some privacy to get all this cool stuff for free, just as we subject ourselves to advertising for free media. But privacy is too complicated. What’s needed is a company (perhaps even a non-profit one) that can allow privacy to be standardized so that people can decide what they are willing to give up on a company-by-company basis.

Some might argue that it would be very difficult for any company to keep up with all of the different innovations that threaten privacy, but to me that is the point. Companies could always ignore this privacy clearinghouse, but people would have the ability to vote no to any company that did not comply, if they feel strongly about privacy.

Then at least we’d know. Right now, privacy advocates claim that people are asleep about privacy, not because they don’t care, but because it is too complicated. Can these advocates band together and set up a mechanism that simplifies? If so, maybe we’ll find out what privacy is really worth and we’ll find which companies want to compete on privacy.

A single honeybee visits hundreds, sometimes thousands, of flowers a day in search of nectar and pollen. Then it must find its way back to the hive, navigating distances up to five miles (eight kilometers), and perform a “waggle dance” to tell the other bees where the flowers are.

A new study shows that long-term exposure to a combination of certain pesticides might impair the bee’s ability to carry out its pollen mission.

“Any impairment in their ability to do this could have a strong effect on their survival,” said Geraldine Wright, a neuroscientist at Newcastle University in England and co-author of a new study posted online February 7, 2013, in the Journal of Experimental Biology.

Wright’s study adds to the growing body of research that shows that the honeybee’s ability to thrive is being threatened. Scientists are still researching how pesticides may be contributing to colony collapse disorder (CCD), a rapid die-off seen in millions of honeybees throughout the world since 2006.

“Pesticides are very likely to be involved in CCD and also in the loss of other types of pollinators,” Wright said. (See the diversity of pollinating creatures in a photo gallery from National Geographic magazine.)

Bees depend on what’s called “scent memory” to find flowers teeming with nectar and pollen. Their ability to rapidly learn, remember, and communicate with each other has made them highly efficient foragers, using the waggle dance to educate others about the site of the food source.

Their pollination of plants is responsible for the existence of nearly a third of the food we eat and has a similar impact on wildlife food supplies.

Previous studies have shown certain types of pesticides affect a bee’s learning and memory. Wright’s team wanted to investigate if the combination of different pesticides had an even greater effect on the learning and memory of honeybees.

“Honeybees learn to associate floral colors and scents with the quality of food rewards,” Wright explained. “The pesticides affect the neurons involved in these behaviors. These [affected] bees are likely to have difficulty communicating with other members of the colony.”

The experiment used a classic procedure with a daunting name: olfactory conditioning of the proboscis extension reflex. In layman’s terms, the bee sticks out its tongue in response to odor and food rewards.

For the experiment, bees were collected from the colony entrance, placed in glass vials, and then transferred into plastic sandwich boxes. For three days the bees were fed a sucrose solution laced with sublethal doses of pesticides. The team measured short-term and long-term memory at 10-minute and 24-hour intervals respectively. This study shows that when pesticides are combined, the impact on bees is far worse than exposure to just one pesticide. “This is particularly important because one of the pesticides we used, coumaphos, is a ‘medicine’ used to treat Varroa mites [pests that have been implicated in CCD] in honeybee colonies throughout the world,” Wright said.

The pesticide, in addition to killing the mites, might also be making honeybees more vulnerable to poisoning and effects from other pesticides.

Stephen Buchmann of the Pollinator Partnership, who was not part of Wright’s study, underscored how critical pollinators are for the world. “The main threat to pollinators is habitat destruction and alteration. We’re rapidly losing pollinator habitats, natural areas, and food-producing agricultural lands that are essential for our survival and well being. Along with habitat destruction, insecticides weaken pollinators and other beneficial insects.”

Stanford University scientists have weighed in on the “maybe not” side of the debate after an extensive examination of four decades of research comparing organic and conventional foods.

They concluded that fruits and vegetables labeled organic were, on average, no more nutritious than their conventional counterparts, which tend to be far less expensive. Nor were they any less likely to be contaminated by dangerous bacteria like E. coli.

The researchers also found no obvious health advantages to organic meats.

Conventional fruits and vegetables did have more pesticide residue, but the levels were almost always under the allowed safety limits, the scientists said. The Environmental Protection Agency sets the limits at levels that it says do not harm humans.

“When we began this project, we thought that there would likely be some findings that would support the superiority of organics over conventional food,” said Dr. Dena Bravata, a senior affiliate with Stanford’s Center for Health Policy and the senior author of the paper, which appears in Tuesday’s issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine. “I think we were definitely surprised.”

The conclusions will almost certainly fuel the debate over whether organic foods are a smart choice for healthier living or a marketing tool that gulls people into overpaying. The production of organic food is governed by a raft of regulations that generally prohibit the use of synthetic pesticides, hormones and additives.

The organic produce market in the United States has grown quickly, up 12 percent last year, to $12.4 billion, compared with 2010, according to the Organic Trade Association. Organic meat has a smaller share of the American market, at $538 million last year, the trade group said.

The findings seem unlikely to sway many fans of organic food. Advocates for organic farming said the Stanford researchers failed to appreciate the differences they did find between the two types of food — differences that validated the reasons people usually cite for buying organic. Organic produce, as expected, was much less likely to retain traces of pesticides.

Organic chicken and pork were less likely to be contaminated by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

“Those are the big motivators for the organic consumer,” said Christine Bushway, the executive director of the trade association.
