The 21st century human is an information junkie. We consume information almost every minute of our waking hours. On the Internet, through newspapers, magazines, billboards, on television; the list is endless.

At least 90 percent of all information that we consume is in the form of words. And how do we access these words? Through typography.
Typography is the art of making words do their job of conveying information in the most efficient way possible.

Typography consists of 5 basic elements:

1. Fonts or type used

2. Size, weight, color, variety of fonts

3. Layout of text – hierarchies and flow

4. Spacing of text

5. Interaction between text and the images

For the sake of simplicity, I shall not delve into leading, kerning, counters and other such technicalities here.

We spend hours of research and design time trying to perfect the layout of a Web page, the color of each button, the number of fields in a form or the navigation from one page to another in order to maximize conversions on our website.

Typography is an integral part of design. Why then, do we not spend any time on understanding how typography affects a user? Do we realize the impact typography can have on website conversions? Do we even think there is a causal relationship between typography and conversions?
Why Should You Care About Typography?

Typography is the nice suit that you wear to your job interview. You do not get hired based on how nice a suit you wore, but wearing a shabby un-ironed suit definitely makes a bad first impression and reduces your chances of landing that dream job.

Going back to the earlier definition of ‘typography’, you’ll notice that the operative words here are, ‘convey information’ and ‘efficiently’.

Like that nice suit of yours, good typography makes your site look attractive and the information on it easy to read and understand. It casts a good first impression and makes a user want to stay and read on.

A user typically lands on your website to fulfill some need of theirs – to get information, to shop, to compare prices and so on. Users on a website typically view your page as a whole. We all do.

We scan for things that jump out at us first and then follow the visual hierarchy of text, images and white space to understand the information being conveyed.

As a designer / marketer, your job is to make life easier for the user.

Use good typography to help your user understand and agree with what your site is trying to convey. That is the first step to turning a visitor to your site into a paying customer.

Why Typograpghy Is Important

Photomanipulation Cartoon

Cartoon Photoshop Tutorial

We will be covering a lot of things in this massive tutorial. You will learn step by step how you can create any cartoon character you imagine using photomanipulation, retouching and color grading techniques. With only Photoshop and stock photos (or your own) you can create a unique caricature that can be a logo, a mascot for a product, a character in an ad, etc.. You can of course use the same techniques explained in this tutorial, in a more subtle way, to spice up your portraits or images.

This tutorial has a massive 89 steps detailing the entire process to achieve the image above and don’t worry, all my tutorials can be done by anyone who has basic knowledge of Photoshop. Unlike other tutorials you’ll sometimes see out there, you don’t need to be a skilled digital painter to achieve the same results I get here – as I’m not a good digital painter myself 😉

Advanced Retouching Tutorial

In this 130-minute video tutorial I will show you different retouching techniques and tricks that will help you transform regular people into eye-popping characters. In this Photoshop tutorial, we will enhance the facial features of the man and the woman giving them a funny cartoonish look perfect for our artwork. We will then work on colors and add a background that will mesh well with our characters. In this case, I choose a background that would give the impression that those two were in an insane asylum!

Tech companies are growing and becoming more creative and innovative with their product designs. Unfortunately, some tech companies get a few simple things wrong that could easily be corrected. These tiny mistakes actually affect the overall use of the product. Some mistakes are more substantial and could be considered serious product defects. Other smaller mistakes are less significant in the overall design of a product and are just plain annoying.
Computers – Function Keys, Power Button, and Annoying Cracks

Computers typically run more efficiently than most other technological devices because they have such advanced technology and precise electronic capabilities. One of the biggest “mistakes” that computer designers make has to do with the function keys at the top of the keyboard. When you push “function” and “F9,” your computer will automatically shut down. It’s likely that you won’t accidentally push both of these buttons simultaneously, so this probably isn’t a huge issue. However, if you are working with the function keys and have it set so they work automatically, this can be a dangerous mistake. Now we know why we were always told to save every five minutes when working on an important project.

Some computers, desktops and laptops alike, have the power button located on a flat horizontal surface. This is more of an annoyance, but the power button placement can be an issue with pets. Cats in particular like to lie on laptop keyboards or walk around on top of desktop towers. If the power button is not covered or is very easy to get to, animals can easily turn the computer on or off.

Something MacBooks got wrong is in the very outside edges of the top and bottom pieces of the laptop. The top edge has little raised areas to provide separation between the two sections when the laptop is closed. This is a helpful addition to the computer’s design, but after repeated opening and closing, the raised areas often result in cracking the bottom piece’s outer edge. Again, this is not a huge issue in terms of usability or overall product function, but it is definitely an annoyance and hindrance in the overall design of the product.

As your IT team looks to upgrade your computational and storage systems, be sure you understand the choices and tradeoffs you face regarding your server CPU options. Some of our recommendations may seem, well, counterintuitive.
As 2013 rolls in and the economy stabilises, many IT organisations are looking to upgrade their computational and storage systems. Like any IT purchasing decision, there are tradeoffs to consider and choices to make regarding hardware features and the technology available. When it comes to storage servers, the first step is understanding your CPU options.

Intel vs. AMD

For at least this year, the two server CPU choices remain Intel and AMD. ARM might solve some of the computational parts of some of the problems, but in 2013, ARM won’t have enough I/O bandwidth with 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports and storage to make it a viable alternative. This might change for 2014, but it’s too soon to predict as development of PCIe buses with enough performance capability is complex.

The latest AMD CPUs have 16 cores, but only if you are running integer operations. When it comes to floating-point operations, you have only eight cores. This combined with the fact that the latest Intel server processors can read and write data from memory significantly faster than AMD processors mean that AMD processors should be relegated to operations with low computational intensity that do not require high-memory bandwidth – you might think of things like VMs, but more on why this is not a good idea later.

Communications between CPU sockets

Another place that Intel has a major advantage is communications between CPU sockets. The current crop of Intel server CPUs support 25.6 gigabits per second (Gbps) of I/O bandwidth between CPU sockets over the Quick Path Interconnect (QPI).

This performance combined with the per-socket memory bandwidth performance exceeds the current performance of AMD CPUs. On multi-socket machines, this has a dramatic impact on the performance for all of the sockets because a process might be making a request for which memory has been allocated on another socket.

Every artist needs to keep visual records of their work—and whether you plan on selling your art right away or keeping it for years, you should always have up-to-date images ready to share.

In this tutorial I’ll explain exactly how to take great photos of your artwork, and cover a few VERY basic steps in Photoshop that will get your images ready for print or uploading onto the internet.

(And by the way, if you don’t have an online portfolio yet, check out foliotwist or Hands Free Artist Websites. I co-founded both of those website services, and they’re a big help for getting your art online.)

For those of you looking to make traditional 35mm slides out of your digital photos, I’ve included a link at the end of the article for that.

All right, lets get started. . .

After the paint is completely dry, take your painting outside on a sunny day. The natural outdoor light is much, MUCH better than anything indoors.

Find a wall, or any place really, where you can prop up your painting so that it stands almost perfectly upright.

I’d suggest using a tripod with your digital camera to make sure that you’re taking perfectly steady shots.

No tripod? Don’t sweat it, a box works just as well.

When you take the photo, remember to tilt the camera slightly down to match the angle that the artwork is leaning – this will help minimize distortion of the original image.

Shadow-if-BrightIf it’s extremely bright, find somewhere that gives little shade, otherwise put the painting in direct sunlight.

Later on I’ve included a photograph which was taken on a really bright summer day in Idaho. I had to tone the sun’s intensity down just a bit so I placed my painting in a shadow.

Normally this won’t be the case, however.

Many people have trouble with their artwork looking like it swelled up. That’s an issue with the camera lens, but it’s easily fixable.

The solution is to use the “zoom” on your camera, and then back farther away from your art.  This will create a more natural amount of depth to the photo and keep those edges from bulging outward.

Be sure to fill the viewfinder of the camera as much as possible and then check to see that all the edges of your work are parallel with the edges of the viewfinder.  You’ll want to especially avoid these types of photographs:

Both of those distortions come from the camera not being dead center to the artwork.

Take several pictures because it won’t always be as easy to tell on the viewfinder whether or not there’s any distortion.  Once your images are up on your computer, you’ll be able to see for sure which photo is best.

When you’ve uploaded the photos to your computer, bring them up in Photoshop or whichever photo-editing software you use.  Although the next few steps will be based in Photoshop, you’ll be able to find something similar in any photo-editing program.

Here’s a picture of one of the paintings in my series of firefighting paintings from the local fire station. As you can see it’s photographed and in Photoshop to crop and correct.

The first step here is to correct the contrast.  Although it’s a fairly good photo already, it’s a little dull compared to the real painting.

In Photoshop, select “Image,” then “Adjustments,” then click on “Auto Contrast.”

That did the trick.  Since it was such a sunny day the colors turned out great without needing any extra work.

Now it’s time to crop the artwork.

Select the “crop” tool from your tool bar and position it at one corner of the painting.

Click and drag the tool to create a box of dotted lines.  Unclick at the opposite corner from where you started.

If you lined up the edges in the viewfinder while you took the photo, then you shouldn’t have any problems at this point.

You can see that everything outside the crop has been dimmed. You’ll want to zoom in to make sure that you’re cropping EVERYTHING out but the painting.

However, I usually crop just a TINY bit into the painting, which takes care of any slight distortions in the photo.

And there’s the finished digital image.  Save yours as a TIFF or PSD so that you don’t lose any file quality later on. Save it again as a JPG if you’re planning on uploading it to the internet.

Once you’ve got a digital portfolio, you might think about turning those files into 35mm slides you can carry around. If so, I’d recommend visiting

Dear Reader,

It’s no secret that 95% of all “Self-Improvement” efforts fail. Although it’s not usually the person’s fault, most people never get beyond information to achieve actual results.

You’ve been there right?

You hear about a great new course… another seminar… another book… all promising to “automatically” change your life.

Yet time after time, you don’t seem to be getting to that ideal life you imagined.

You suffer through failed promise after failed promise…

It can be frustrating.

It can be expensive.

And it can be downright discouraging.

People have told me they actually feel WORSE after some of these programs, seminars and gurus get done with them.

WORSE! Can you imagine?

That simply shouldn’t happen.

So, how can you know for SURE that the principles, techniques or strategies you’re studying actually work and get results?

The answer is simple; you “certify” your results. But what, exactly, do I mean by “certify”?

Here’s the deal…

No philosophy or teaching should ever be accepted by anyone (including what I teach) unless you can certify its validity in your own life.

How can you do that?

That’s what I want to share with you today.

Dear Health-Conscious Dessert Lover,

Enjoying a delicious dessert at the end of a great meal is one of life’s sweetest pleasures.

Moist vanilla cupcakes with chocolate buttercream… warm pumpkin pie… crème brulée… carrot cake with cream cheese frosting… fresh brownies…

Or just imagine the smell of freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies wafting from your kitchen…

Just thinking about these decadent creations makes your mouth water and few of us have the willpower to resist.

But we often feel guilty for indulging in sweet treats. After all, most desserts are filled with sugar, refined carbohydrates and unhealthy fats, and they pack more calories than the meal itself!

Too many “sweet treats” like this will not only make you fat… it could ruin your health!

But what if you could…

Relax with a piece of New York cheesecake topped with raspberry sauce

Satisfy your cravings with a warm slice of cinnamon apple crisp, or

Enjoy chocolate rum balls and rich chocolate brownies

Without a care as to how it might affect your waistline or your health?

And what if these desserts were not only irresistibly delicious, but good for you too?

If you keep an eye on your health, but you still love to indulge in decadent desserts, you’ll be glad to know that… You have your cake and be well too!

You Don’t Have to Sacrifice Your Health
To Enjoy Dessert (As Often as You Like!)

As a photographer, how many times have you had your portrait taken. There is  nothing more uncomfortable and awkward than sitting in front of a camera trying  to evoke a natural smile or a true, heart felt expression. Let’s be honest, the  experience of having your portrait taken can be down right terrifying, yet we  aspire to have our subjects pose and emote in an organic and subtle way that  transcends and captures the embodiment of our subjects personality. Simple  right?

The reality is that the camera makes our subjects self-conscious and hyper  aware of their appearance, with an overall fear of not capturing a single image  that meets their approval. I mean, how many of us truly look in the mirror each  morning thinking, “Wow, I am looking fantastically, good today?” Most of the  time, all we can see are the imperfections and bothersome nuances that melt away  and stifle the perception of our own esthetic. So how does one capture a nice,  natural portrait?

I have read many articles and blog posts concerning this topic. Many focus on  trying to relax your subject either through gentle conversation and personal  connection or simply by breaking out some wine as a medicament to treat the  inhibitions created by the shoot. The truth is that there is no easy recipe to  help overcome this problem. No matter whether you are shooting a model, family  member, or even a close friend, the camera is still the giant 400 pound gorilla  in the room that everyone knows is there regardless of any distractions. So what  can we do?

Aside from normal social graces and pre-planning  for the shoot, I have one simple method that surprisingly works almost every  time. PROPS! It is amazing what magic can happen when you give your subject  something else to interact with while you are shooting. Cuts right through some  of those awkwardly, silent moments when both you and the subject know things are  not working yet no one wants to admit it. Yes, we all experience these  gratingly, uncomfortable situations.

So what kind of props am I talking about? All and any kinds. They can be  silly, beautiful, interesting or even surprisingly strange. These can be fresh  flowers, a costume, a masquerade mask, a piece of interesting fabric, a hat, a  pet, a piece of fruit, sports equipment, a music instrument, a lawn mower, oven  mitts, or even an original, mint in box, Darth Vader action figure from Star  Wars. The reality is that any item that has some meaning to the subject or that  they can relate to will work and don’t be afraid to go way outside the box into  the realm of the disturbingly obscure or insanely cliche. It is amazing how a  simple prop can break the ice and give the subject something with which to  interact, allowing you to capture a few true emotive moments when they have  forgotten about the camera, shed some of the self conscious inhibitions and  helped you create a beautifully expressive portrait.
